Education for Latinos can be where Democrats and Republicans find common ground to
strengthen that massive but under-schooled demographic with better academic facilities, classroom training and well-paying jobs, said a federal expert on Hispanic education during a stop at New Mexico State University on Monday.
"Almost every single one of the ideas proposed, has already been proposed by Republicans. This is not new crazy leftist stuff. This is where the two parties can come together," said Juan Sepúlveda, executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
Sepúlveda was the keynote speaker during the third annual Leadership Summit of the Hispanic Faculty/Staff Caucus at New Mexico State University. During a noontime banquet with about 200 community leaders, he outlined the Obama administration's agenda for Latino education from within the framework of three key aspects:
• reminding Latinos - and the country - of the critical value of education;
• acknowledging the tremendous impact Latinos have on the United States;
• inviting Latinos to help move the education agenda forward. READ MORE
